The tradition of #handblock #printing is a centuries-old one in India. With the modern influx of screen printing (some set up to replicate the natural inconsistencies in hand-block printing), the carving of traditional blocks has taken a hit. A lot of them are being die-cut or laser-cut. These have been individually hand-carved by Arshad Kafil, a third-generation craftsperson, Shilpguru and National Awardee, who refuses to work with a die or laser.
What we love: the delicacy of the motifs; adapting in order to stay relevant; the poignancy of a now-dying craft. Our favourite #motif, the paisley, captures this history and poignancy.
