Sharing stories. Curating crafts

Posted by Kajri Crafts on Feb 15th 2014

For as far back as I can remember, handmade things around me, had a story or anecdote. This was particularly true of saris and traditionally crafted objects. This bird-feeding toy was purchased at the railway station in Varanasi after a 22-hour-long train journey. That sari was part of a well-loved and treasured trousseau, given by a popular aunt. This Bidri work box was purchased when Dad was posted to Secunderabad, and held all of our bits and bobs for years...

Even till today, when my sisters, both biological and chosen, admire something the other is wearing, or has, out comes a story.

Below the stories we weave around these objects through our experiences and memories, are the stories that are intrinsic to the piece. The underpinnings of a craft tradition, the clack of a pit loom, the soft blips of a crewel dextrously working wool stretched taut on an embroidery frame...

Kajri was born out of a desire to weave these stories into a glorious, multi-coloured patchwork of textile techniques, lacquerwork, silver, traditional fragrances and the many, many other crafts that are embedded in the Indian subcontinent. To rediscover crafts through sisterhood and curate the best that our heroes, the Indian craftspeople, have to offer.
